travel plans

Hey friends :)

I have big news: I'll go on a Japan holiday in summer! I'm so excited! I've actually never left Europe before... I'll travel with my best friend - so it's gonna be double good ;) We'll go to Tokio for a few days (there we hope to visit the Ghibli studios/museum) and then we might travel a bit although that might be quite expensive, so we have to plan well. I'm grateful for any good advice - anything from how to live/travel cheaply to where to stay to where to go :) hints about the lesbian/gay/queer... subculture are especially welcome *g*

Furthermore I'm gonna be in Brighton in the end of May to enjoy the sea and meet all my lovely friends and then in London in the beginning of July to see the Magnetic Fields! So if anyone wants to catch up - meet me there, I'll stick around a couple of days!

As you can see: I am hardly ever home. So if you wanna visit Berlin in summer there's a good chance you'll find one or two spare rooms in our flat, which you are invited to use! If you wanna visit me, though, you should write me an email soon to book some of my sparse time ;)

New L Word season!

Finally January. The only thing to look forward to after x-mas (yes, I like x-mas kitsch!) is the new L Word season in the beginning of the year... Everybody claims that this is the last one. I hope not. Yeah, there are so many things that I wish would be different in the L Word. But where is the substitute that we could turn to? Where is the less soapy, even queerer, more explicitly feminist tv entertainment? Of course I wish there would be a multitude of lesbian tv programs... I’m still waiting for George’s coming out in Dead Like Me. Or rather Daisy’s? And for the feminist super hero_ine series. Or at least a gender-bending trans character in Heroes. Or maybe there already is one in the second season? I wouldn’t know; I was too pissed off by the stupid, unimaginative, patriarchal, status quo affirming end of the first, so I didn’t watch the new one... Or what about a lesbian guerillia politics magazine? Or a reality tv show about a group of queer polyamourists? Ahh – nobody’s gonna read this ☹ Well, there’s going to be a lesbian remake of “Lola rennt” next year. I don’t know what to expect. And since Wonder Woman isn’t going to be directed by Joss Whedon I doubt it’s gonna be any good. What are we going to do? Will we have to watch L Word again and again until somebody decides to invest money in another Sugar Rush season? And as for films: before I have to watch another Itty Bitty Titty Committee I’ll rather turn my back to commercial lesbian film-making and found a John Waters fanclub.
Blablah...

Actually I wanted to write about the new L Word episodes. The first one started promising: some exciting moments from the fourth season to start with *sigh* And then Jenny working on Lez Girls, rewriting her own experiences into a lesbian pulp fiction for a hetero audience. We see the beginning of the first season through her eyes. You might object: I don’t wanna see that. But you should reconsider – it’s so much fun to not just listen to Jennys version of the first episode party scene but actually see Bette and Tina and Shane enact their Lez Girls counterparts Bev and Nina and Shaun as life size lesbian (girlongirl) porn clichees. Seeing that, you understand the difference between mainstream hetero representation of lesbians and the L Word. Well, I reckon that if you didn’t get the difference before you’d probably not watch the series anyway. I wonder which audience they had in mind when they made this...

I wonder less about the scene where Bette and Tina try to score points at the pre-school application interview. They argue with their bi-racial, lesbian, etc. status but don’t seem to stand a chance against a gay male couple who are Muslim and Christian and whose son is adopted and “half Jewish, a quarter Latino and a quarter Chinese.” The contest of the adults is foiled (?) by shots of the 2-year-olds looking at each other, both standing between their parents... We could read this scene as a horrible backlash anti-pc statement ála: “Homos always get the best opportunities nowadays and normal people (aka what they think is normal) don’t stand a chance against minorities. The world is out of joint!” (I was actually confronted with these arguments recently when I met an old family friend whom I used to admire and ask for help when I was a teenager.) But lets assume that there are not so many reactionary homophobic people watching the L Word. I see this scene as a statement about the chances and perils of identity politics: It shows how people can take the victim identity projected onto them and turn it around as a weapon in order to get what/where they want (their children to be...) The frame of reference of this representation is the possible/likely discrimination of children of gay parents but it reaches beyond that scope. While acknowledging that there actually IS something like homophobia in this (L) world the scene avoids victimisation of the children because we do not actually see them discriminated against. I don’t know how you feel but one of the reasons I love the L Word is the absence of discrimination and violence against the protagonists to the greatest extend. I know it, I’ve seen it, I experience(d) it and that’s enough for me; show me some positive role models! Thank you ☺

But it’s not just the anti-victimizing statement I value in the scene. The exchange of catchphrases over their children’s heads (who, I reckon, don’t understand what’s going on) like in the TV game show duel, outlines very well the ridiculousness of this insistence on victim identities as the centre of one’s (or rather your children’s) self. And it also demonstrates which aspects of your life you can turn into weapons against normative society and which not when Bette and Teena let the interviewer believe that they are still together. Afterwards Teena says to Bette: “It was a little white lie told for the greater good … I think it works in our favour that we are a lesbian couple, I think we scored diversity points for that. I just don’t think they are ready for a divorced lesbian family.”

There's nothing like getting up in the morning and finding a note from a dear friend in the kitchen ;) The good news is that she is going to move out in a couple of days anyway...

Maybe when we are interviewing new potential flat mates we should make a rule against inappropriate arrogancy? Or just against unoriginal insults? hmmmm... Suggestions and ideas for witty vituperations welcome - i still need so much help with my English :D

even though there are sad things happening in my life. they make me think. and they make me want to live. life's good. i want to enjoy it as long and as good as i can. sometimes we need to be reminded of such simple things...
anyway - it's autumn and i like autumn and i met real nice people during the last weeks, or lets say at least one really nice person :)
and i read a lot of christian morgenstern today (he wrote rather romantic poems, but alos a lot of fun stuff...) and that makes me feel good. besides i discovered the magnetic fields and their lyrics are just the right mix of funny and sad for me right now... i highly recommend them against (or for) all your (autumn) depressions!!

if that doesn't help, then this rather virtuous pic of my back might do the job ;) unfortunately i think it's too... well, too lewd for my lesarion profile and i'm concerned they won't publish it... but since it is so great i'll put it here for all my friend's delight (now ain't i a good girl)

hey there :)

wir haben ab jetzt ein "thema der woche" in unserer wohnung. wir versuchen eine woche lang so viel wie möglich begriffe zum thema zu finden - in englisch und deutsch. diese woche haben wir das thema "schwangerschaft" gewählt. wir haben schon ne menge gefunden, aber suchen noch nette, gemeine oder euphemistische ausdrücke für schwanger sein oder geschwängert werden! also bitte postet doch mal, was euch so einfällt, wir hatten heut schon sehr viel spaß *grins* vielleicht veröffentliche ich ja ende der woche unsere liste...

we have a "theme of the week" contest thing in our flat going on from now on. we try to find as many terms or phrases in english and german. this week's topic is "pregnancy". we already have a lot of terms around the topic but we're still looking for circumscriptions for being or becoming pregnant! nice ones, mean ones, euphemisms etc. if anyone wants to read it, i could publish the list in the end of the week :)

Endlich mal wieder etwas schoenes aus Berlin zu berichten! Ich hatte ein wunderbares Nikolausgeschenk. Und "Wunder" trifft es ziemlich genau ;)
Nachdem ich den Glauben an mein Institut schon vor mehreren Semestern aufgegeben habe und die Vorstellung ein mehrsemestriges Studienprojekt mit meinen so geschaetzten Kommiliton_innen durchfuehren zu muessen mich nur mit Grausen erfuellte, durfte ich jetzt feststellen, dass es nicht nur halb so schlimm ist. Nein, es ist sogar eine sehr erfreuliche Angelegenheit! Ich geniesse nicht nur das Privileg, mich in meiner Zwischenpruefung lang und breit mit feministischen Theorien auseinandersetzen zu duerfen, sondern ich arbeite auch mit Professorinnen zusammen, die wissenschaftliche Texte tatsaechlich noch "aufregend" und sogar "atemberaubend" finden!
An Tagen wie diesem weiss ich ganz genau warum ich mal angefangen habe zu studieren. Und vor allem auch warum ich weitermachen will :)

Finally some good news from my misearable Berlin life ;) I got a wonderful pre-xmas-present!
After I already had given up my belief in my department, and the idea of participating in a 3 semester project just gave me the creeps each time it came to mind, I now realised that it actually can be a delightful experience! Not enough that i enjoyed the privilege to do two whole exams exclusively on feminist theories, but apparently I also work with professors who really take enough delight in their profession to call a scientific paper "exciting" and even "breathtaking"!
These are the days when I'm reminded why I went to uni. And also why I wanna stay there :)

Berlin Berlin

Yes, I'm back. And yes, I miss Brighton. I miss it so much, i had to put a postcard with the pier and sunset over my desk... *sigh* I also miss all my friends... H and G just left and returned to the beautiful sea after some days in Berlin... We had loads of fun! Well, at least I had ;) Apparently I'm turning in a cocktail-drinking kareoke addict :) I'm lookin 4ward now to have N over!!! All others please feel invited to visit me and Berlin sooner or later :)

Unfortunately I won't make it to Brighton before January. I'll tell u as soon as I book my flight when exactly I'll be there! And I also still plan to come to Brighton in March for several weeks and am looking for places to stay. It's also possible to just switch places in case u plan a Berlin visit in the same time.

Jaja, ich hab kaum zeit, um hier mal zu schreiben, die meiste Zeit bin ich arbeiten oder freund_innen treffen, ausgehen, computer spielen... ich versuche die letzten wochen freiheit auszukosten : ) aber meine geburtstagsfeier schien ein guter anlass, euch mal wieder ein paar bildchen zukommen zu lassen. Urspruenglich wollte ich am strand feiern, aber da war es zu stuermisch. Also sind wir ins Doctor Brighton umgezogen, da war es auch trockener ;)

ausserdem hatte ich meinen ersten kontakt mit den "sims"... meine erste reaktion war: was fuer ne heterosexistische, kapitalistische scheisse! aber da hatte ich mich wohl zu voreilig auf die spielbeschreibung meines (maennlichen, weissen und vermutlich heterosexuellen) mitspielers verlassen: "es geht darum, familien zu bilden und geld zu verdienen damit man(n) sich haeuser und andere sachen kaufen kann"

hmm. als ich erst mal das tutorial hinter mir hatte und angefangen hab meine eigene "familie" zu basteln (ja, mensch kann selbst charaktere entwerfen, die nicht gezwungenermassen carrieremenschen sein muessen - obwohl die einzige alternative zu geld und karriere schienen ruhm und liebe/familie zu sein ;) durfte ich feststellen, dass mensch sehr wohl auch als einzelgaenger_in leben kann. und: ueberraschung!

es war moeglich meine 4-personen-familie ausschliesslich aus frauen zu basteln ("natuerlich" gibt es keine moeglichkeit figuren ausserhalb der maennlich-weiblich-dichotomie zu konstruieren...) und trotzdem ist es eine familie! immerhin. und dann ... trommelwirbel ... gab es tatsaechlich die option, die charaktere als ehepartnerinnen zu verbinden!!!

ach, eine alberne kleine - nein, eher eine alberne grosse freude befiel mich ;) und ich dachte, dass mensch manchmal doch ganz gern die kleinen alltagsfreuden einer anerkannten und adressierten sexualitaet geniesst...
auch wenn ich zugeben muss: die anerkennung bedeutet, an einer ungeheuer konsumorientierten welt teilzuhaben und sie mitgestalten zu duerfen...

und dann hab ich mir angesehen was der computer denn jetzt aus meiner kleinen familie gemacht hat. er generiert zum beispiel wuensche fuer jede einzelne figur, die die spielende dann irgendwie erfuellen muss. und schwupps: da war er: der kinder-adoptions-wunsch einer der frauen... dabei hatte ich schon eine teenagerin zur familie hinzugefuegt! aber nein, es muss eben ein baby sein! ein gemeinsames... oder so... na gut, das unterstell ich jetzt, aber das ist ja der gedanke dahinter. vorher koennen sie eben nicht gluecklich sein und sind auch keine "familie" *grummel*

ist eben in computerspielen doch alles wie im richtigen leben ;)
oder vielleicht doch alles ein wenig besser?

i had my first contact with "the sims"! my first reaction was: what a heterosexist, capitalist shit! but i might have trusted too easily the valuation of my (white, male and most likely heterosexual) co-worker: "it's all about building a family and earn money so you can buy houses and other stuff"

hmm. after exercising in the tutorial i started creating my own "family" (yes, u can actually design your own characters and they do not necessarily need to be careeristic pigs - although the only alternative to money and career seem to be fame and love/family ;) anyway - here i discovered not only that one doesn't need to fulfill the bourgeois ideal but also live as "maverick" or even homosexual relationships (needless to add: couples, indeed) thus, i could not only create an exclusively female community but they were actually defined as a family by the game! (even more needless to add that there is no possibility to design characters beyond the male-female dichotomy) PLUS: ... drum roll ... there was even the option to connect my grrls as wives!!!

and this little (or better big) silly delight overcame ;) and i thought that sometimes it's really enjoyable to gain the privileges of an acknowledged and (even by the computer game industry) addressed sexuality...
although i must admit: this acknowledgement means basically to take part in an enormously consumerist world and to be allowed to fashion it...
and then i checked what the computer had made of my cute little lesbian family. the game for example generates wishes for each character, that must be fulfilled by the player. and there it was: the wish to adopt a child by one of the women! (one half of my couple) even though i had added a teenage girl to the family already! but no... it must be a common baby! before that a couple cannot be happy and - more important - cannot really count as family... *grumble*

as we can clearly see now: computer games are like the real world after all ;) or maybe a lil bit better nevertheless?

juhuuu! ich fahr zu meiner ersten konferenz!! ich meine: ich trage zum ersten mal etwas vor :)
ich bin schon soooo aufgeregt - positiv aufgeregt und noch gar nicht nervoes *hihi* dafuer ist ja auch noch genug zeit kurz vorher... :)
fuer alle, die's interessiert: es heisst "Identity Politics Reloaded: Claiming Gay Victim Status in German Holocaust Memorial Debates"
es geht um die bedeutung des mahnmals fuer die homosexuellen NS-opfer fuer die deutsche schwul-lesbische bewegung... hilfe! ich glaub ich kann das nur noch auf englisch, klingt so holprig in deutsch ;-o

yeah! i'm going to my first conference! i mean: i participate in my first conference - i present a paper :) oh, i'm sooo excited! think there'll still be enough time to be nervous when i'm there ;)

it's about the significance of the discussion around the memorial for the gay nazi-victims for the german lgbt mainstream...

besides that: summer seems to be here to stay :) try to concentrate on my paper, but the sun shines in my room, the seagulls make noises, the football fans cheer and my neighbours sit in their gardens and eat strawberries. so i climb on my roof from time to time and have tea and cherries and cornflakes with strawberries... the good life...

davon abgesehen: der sommer hat sich breit gemacht! es ist heiss und ich muss mich auf mein paper konzentrieren waehrend die sonne mir auf den ruecken scheint. ich kann die moewen kreischen hoeren, und die fussballfans auch und meine nachbarInnen essen erdbeeren in ihren gaerten. also setz ich mich auch ab und zu auf's dach und trinke tee und esse kirschen und cornflakes mit erdbeeren... :) das gute leben...

Erstens: Gute Nachrichten fuer all meine engen Freund_innen, die meine 4-Monats-Depression seit Januar ertragen mussten: ES IST VORBEI!!!

Zweitens: Gute Nachrichten fuer mich, weil ich zwar nicht die Chance habe, meinen Master in Sussex zu machen, aber dafuer den ganzen Sommer frei habe!!! Ich habe mich schon gut ins Lotterleben gestuerzt, und einiges gelernt:
Es ist zwar aergerlich, wenn die Bibliothek Buecher nur fuer eine Woche rausgibt, aber mit der entsprechenden Freizeit ist es kein Problem, Tipping the Velvet in dieser Zeit zu bewaeltigen.
Ausserdem habe ich wiederentdeckt, wie schoen es ist, morgens nach dem Aufstehen zuerst zu entscheiden, ob man Fruehstuecken im Bett am liebsten mit Hoerspielhoeren, Lesen, Quatschen oder sonstigen Dingen kombinieren will ;)
Des weiteren habe ich gelernt, dass London mit genug Freizeit gar nicht hektisch sein muss, dass der Besuch von Galerien mit alten Bildern eine gute Entschuldigung ist, um leichtbekleidete, zeitlose Schoenheiten anzustarren, und dass trotzdem nichts eine Lesbian on Ecstasy schlaegt ;) (siehe Bild)

First: Good news for all my close friends who had to endure my 4-months-depression: IT'S OVER!!!

Second: Good news for me for I have the whole summer off after I learned that I cannot get my MA degree here in Sussex. I already adopted my new dissolute livestyle and learned quite a bit:
Although it is annoying when the library won't give u a book for longer than a week, but with enough spare time it's no problem to finnish Tipping the Velvet in this time.
Also, I rediscovered the joy of deciding first thing in the morning if you wanna combine your breakfast in bed with listening to audiobooks, reading, chatting, or further pleasant things ;)
Furthermore I learned that London doesn't need to be hectic at all if you bring enough time, that visiting old galleries is an excellent excuse for staring at timeless, scantily dressed beauties, and yet that nothing beats a Lesbian on Ecstasy ;) (see pic)

i dunno y i'm so euphoric... maybe it's just that i finally finnished my first paper. i felt like shit yesterday. like all energy sucked out of me. like all the happyness had disappeared from the world... and 2day i feel the energy floating back in2 my body and mind. i realised there is somethin like optimism ;)

weiss nicht warum, aber es geht mir gut! ich hab gestern endlich mein paper abgegeben. hab mich wie scheisse gefuehlt danach. als waere alle energie aus mir rausgesaugt. als ob alles glueck von der welt verschwunden waere... und heut fuehl ich wie die energie beginnt in mich zurueck zu fliessen. ich hab festgestellt, dass es tatsaechlich so etwas wie optimismus gibt ;)

had my first ever uk gig yesterday and must say: i missed it!!! more: the grrrls and bois loved it :) so i don't need to take anti-depressants - i just have to change my profession! i'll become a professional dj! that's just the best ego booster you can get ;)
the only problem: flirting is difficult. you might be the queen of the night, but this can be intimidating and worse: you're busy deciding for the next song and cannot send longing gazes through the room - hehe!
that's all. now i'm gonna use my new energy for studying :))

hatte gestern meinen ersten dj-gig im lande und ich muss zugeben: hab es sooo vermisst! besser noch: alle fanden es toll! (also zumindest alle, mit denen ich gesprochen hab ;) ) also ich brauch gar keine anti-depressiva - ich muss nur den beruf wechseln! ich werde professionelle djane!! der beste ego-schub, den ich kriegen kann ;)
das einzige problem: flirten ist etwas schwierig, wenn mensch die ganze zeit damit beschaeftigt ist, den naechsten song auszusuchen! aber dafuer bist du die koenigin der nacht - hihi...
das war's auch schon. jetzt werd ich meine neu-gewonnene energie in studieren umsetzen :))

also ich versuch das hier mal aktuell zu halten, nachdem die ersten beschwerden kamen :)
ich hab angefangen meine 10'000 woerterchen fuer die term papers zu produzieren und - ueberraschung - ich bin ungeheuer laaaaaaaangsaaam :(
aber es gibt auch positives zu berichten: ich fahr im juni nach leeds zur konferenz "thinking gender: the next generation" und werd eines meiner term papers vorstellen: Identity Politics Reloaded: Competing for Victim Status in Holocaust Memorial Debates
(bin mir noch nicht sicher, wegen des titels...)

draussen ist der fruehling voll dabei: sonnenschein, warm, blaues meer, die narzissen schon fast verwelkt, aber dafuer strahlt mir jetzt die forsythie ins zimmer :) und dann sind da noch die fickenden moewen vorm fenster, fast fuehl ich mich einsam vor meinem bildschirm... ;) aber eine gutes maedchen wie ich hat ihre strategien: ein neuer haarschnitt, eine neue farbe und ein nagelneues rockabilly-western-hemd in schwarz und pink mit brennendem herz und allem drum und dran!!! yeah! werd ich am sonntag zu meinem ersten dj-gig in uk tragen! bin schon soo aufgeregt... wir haben einen ganzen queer-mutiny tag im sozialen zentrum geplant (soli fuer die queeruption) mit roast (so was aehnliches wie brunch in berlin, nur viel englischer ;) ) und disko und bingo!
seufz. aber jetzt muss ich zurueck an die arbeit :(
aber ich verspreche, bilder von mir zu posten. ich werd sie mit dem handy machen, denn hier ist immer noch keine kamera angekommen! m*****s schuld! ;)

outside it starts to be warm and sunny, the sea is blue, the daffodils are almost wilted, but there's lots of yellow in forsythias :) the seagulls fuck in front of my window, what makes me feel lonely ;) sometimes...
but i did what a good girl does if she feels bad: got a new haircut! a new colour! a brand-new rockabilly cowboy shirt in black and pink - yeeeha!!! i'll wear it on sunday - my first dj gig here in uk!! i'm so excited... we'll have a whole queer mutiny day in the social centre with roast, music and bingo! sigh. i must go back to my studies now.
but i promise to take pics of myself. with my mobile, since there's still no sign of a camera in the mail, blame l*** m***** ;)

Ja, ich bin altmodisch. Deswegen gibts an dieser stelle blumen fuer alle fleissigen menschen in meinem freundeskreis, die vor kurzem ihr studium abgeschlossen haben, oder das demnaechst tun werden :) Dass es das gibt - und sich die Faelle sogar haeufen - ist extrem ermutigend in meiner studienkrise... Und natuerlich bin ich auch ganz gelb vor neid, wie ihr an meiner wahl sehen koennt ;) Na jedenfalls:

here in brighton is spring, but it's cold nevertheless...
that's why i have a cat now: to charm my room and turn it into a place i want to be and watch movies all the time ;)
she came one day and occupied my room. now she visits me every day :) could also be because of the cat food i generously offer to all cats of the neighbourhood - hihi!

darum hab ich mir eine katze zugelegt: damit sie mein zimmer in einen wohlfuehlort verwandelt, wo ich die ganze zeit rumhaengen und filme gucken will ;)
sie kam eines tages durchs fenster spaziert, und kommt mich jetzt jeden tag besuchen :) was auch mit dem futter zusammenhaengen koennte, mit dem ich die mietzen der ganzen nachbarschaft versorge - hihi!

also: auf vielfachen wunsch weniger gibt es hier eine kleine brighton pier geschichtem und zwar mit extra-vielen foto-links! ich hab meinen mitbewohner verhoert, und der hat folgendes verlauten lassen :)

das west pier hat so vor sich hingerottet...

stand unter denkmalschutz, aber immer kein geld zum renovieren, ihr wisst ja, wie zu hause ;) bis es dann nach diversen sturmattacken so aussah.

und dann - mysteriously - hat's gebrannt. big happening. viel publikum:

und nach noch einem feuerchen war's dann nicht mehr so schick...

und so ungefaehr schaut's heute aus, nachdem es noch ein bisschen weiter gerostet und gerottet ist.

trotzdem noch ganz romantisch, oder? ;) wenn es auch vorher weit pittoresker war... :( hier nochmal zum vergleich 2002:
